THE Open Road is quintessentially American. But the lure of wide-open spaces and untamed terrain , which capture our imagination and arrest our sense of adventure, is universally woven into the soul of every man. It is a symbol: a symbol of freedom.
There have been times in my life when “the call” to take to the open road, was so profound, that it seemed the only thing that could release me from my inner turmoil.
When the stress of paying bills, meeting deadlines, getting ahead at work began to wear on me like a meaningless conversation at a cocktail party; I would start to ask the question: “What is life all about, anyway”? So, off I would go in my 4 x 4 Jeep wrangler, to kiss the asphalt with the rubber from my tires; At the same time, my mind, wrestling with the most philosophical questions known to man.
There is something about the long winding road and getting lost in the wilderness that appeals to me: like when you drive for miles without seeing another car or when you pull off the road and hear nothing but the glorious sound of silence. It is pure -symphony. A melody of peaceful repose to my overburdened soul.
Yet, the peace I so desperately was seeking in those open spaces, eluded me. The clamor of life, too quickly, would return like dust to an attic. Interestingly enough, I found that the road to true peace leads not to a place…….. but a Person. Jesus Christ is called: The Prince of Peace. In John 3:16 we learn that ” God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
When man sinned against God in the garden of Eden – all mankind fell into sin. This separated you and I from our Heavenly Father because God is Holy; He can not be in fellowship with sinful man. But He did make a way for us, to return to him, by sending his Son Jesus to die on the cross and pay our debt. Jesus Christ is our redeemer.
In Matthew 7:13 ,Christ admonishes us: “”Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.”
The only way ,to get to God and to Heaven, is to enter through the narrow gate: The Person of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Messiah warns us, that the road to salvation…..IS the road less traveled.
