“The Journey of a Thousand Miles begins with the first step” is a famous Chinese quote from Lao Tzu; In 1992, I heard these profound words for the first time delivered at my college graduation. It’s funny how some things stay with you; Over the years, when I’ve been at a cross road or an impasse in my life, these words have come back to encourage me.
There is a myriad of first steps in life: baby steps, first words, the first day of school,
first relationship, apartment, job. And usually, that first step is the hardest because it requires some faith. Even Abraham from the Bible, called “the father of many nations”, discovered that only by faith was he able to have a relationship with God and fulfill his destiny on earth. It is the same with all of us. When we come to a fork in the road…..how do you know which road to take? You have to have faith – in something.
Since the beginning of time God created the heavens and the earth. He is the intelligent designer and knows everything about you; because he created each one of us. So how do we find our destiny in light of the One who created us? Don’t we first need to have faith in the God who made us: loves us, cares for us, died on the Cross at Calvary for us?
When man sinned against God in the garden of Eden it created a wall of hostility been men
and God; since we are all descendents of the first man and woman – we all fell into sin. Jesus Christ, was the great redeemer who came to die for our sins on the cross over 2,000 years ago. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God “2 Corinthians 5:21.
The only way to begin a journey in life is to have faith. The only way to know the right path, is to have faith in the One who made you and the One who holds your destiny in his hands.
Then, it will be easier to take that first step on the journey of a thousand miles – The Long Leg.
